Stewart Tussing Band

BiO

The three veteran Nashville musicians who make up The Stewart Tussing Band, Gary Tussing, Tom Nordin and Kevin Stewart, met and were all originally from the Tampa Bay area. They performed together in clubs, colleges and concerts throughout the country during the eighties and after going their separate ways each independently wound up in Nashville. They became session players and/or music writers and performed and worked with a litany of artists in and out of Nashville. Reconnecting with each other, they also created various incarnations of the Stewart Tussing Band featuring Stewart’s original music and performing dates as schedules allowed.

Cellist Gary Tussing has performed with the likes of Led Zeppelin’s Unleaded tour (with Page and Plant), Dolly Parton, The Dillards and even Isaac Hayes. He’s recorded on a diverse list of projects from Paramore, Kane Brown, Alan Jackson and Keith Urban. He’d often worked with producer Bil VornDick who is well known for his unique ability to coax the best from acoustic instrumentalists such as Bela Fleck.

With the Stewart Tussing Band, Tussing finds the freedom to create and improvise, which is not often required of a symphony cellist (he’s played with the Florida Gulf Coast Symphony, Florida Orchestra, Mantovani Orchestra and Pinellas Youth Symphony). His special talents contribute significantly to the band’s unique sound.

On drums and keyboard is Tom Nordin who, throughout his decades in Nashville, worked recording sessions and road engagements with nearly every type of musical act. He was featured as drummer on the outstanding “David and Goliath” progressive rock album that was a solo work of violinist David Ragsdale of the rock band Kansas. He’s also had the opportunity to work with Burt Bacharach, Buddy Miles, Roy Orbison and jazz great Dizzy Gillespie.

Tom has been the impetus for keeping the group going and is the solid foundation.

Kevin Stewart is a writer and vocalist who is the eclectic engine of the band. Although a writer in Nashville, who over the years worked with many (Charlie Daniels Band, Dobie Gray, Larry Henley…), he never totally embraced the Nashville writing ‘machine’ and most often chose instead to explore his personal musical interests. His own recording projects found him working with the likes of Ben Keith (producer, steel guitar for Neil Young), Spooner Oldham (keys with Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Neil Young) and Harvey Brooks (bass, Bob Dylan, Al Kooper, Electric Flag, etc., etc.) to name a few.

In the Stewart Tussing Band, Stewart also plays guitars and holds down the low end with Moog bass pedals.

Together the Stewart Tussing band is a lush, full combination of melody, harmony and percussive rhythm that is greater than the sum of its obvious components.

The Stewart Tussing Band is currently in the midst of recording their third studio album, with the tentative title “From Here to Then”.
